HISTORIC PHRAE

SuanGlangNa is a short 15-minute drive from the historic old town.   Those curious what life in Thailand was like several generations ago can find it in Phrae. That life is well preserved within the historic walled area of the city.  Phrae was at its peak as the center of the teak trade in the late 1800s and early 1900s, much of that era is preserved in the old city.  Two museums preserve the lifestyle of that era, and the character of the city inside the wall from that period is still evident today as the modern city has developed outside the historic area.  Many of the teak mansions from that era are preserved.

Phrae city is one of the oldest continually inhabited sites in this part of the country and was an important settlement in the ancient Mon Haripunchai kingdom. It is thought to have been originally founded under the name Muang Phon in 828 and the origins of the historic wall have been dated to that period.  Portions of the wall and the surrounding moat are preserved in a park at Pratu Chai, the site of a traditional market and a lively street food scene.

Phrae remains a charming and authentic blend of beautiful architecture, historic religious sites, traditional lifestyles
